Almost every sweepstakes casino now has a VIP program, and most promise some version of "rakeback", "coinback" or "cashback". They are not the same thing, they are funded by different parts of your play, and they are worth much less than the tier names suggest. This guide explains how each works, uses Stake.us as the main example, and shows how to tell a real perk from a reason to spend more.
Rakeback, cashback and coinback
| Term | Calculated on | Paid when |
|---|---|---|
| Rakeback | A share of the house edge on every bet you place | Win or lose |
| Cashback | A share of your net losses over a period | Only after a losing period |
| Coinback | Brand name; check whether it works like rakeback or cashback | Varies |
| Level-up bonus | Fixed coins when you reach a new tier | Once per level |
What rakeback is really worth
Rakeback is calculated on the house edge, not on the bet. The house edge is the casino's expected take: about 4% on a typical slot, about 1% on Stake's Crash. A rakeback rate is a share of that.
That is why rakeback feels small. Wager 1,000 SC on slots and the expected cost is about 40 SC; a 5% share of that is 2 SC. It is a genuine return on play you were doing anyway, and it adds up for heavy players, but it never turns an expected loss into a profit.
Stake.us VIP, in plain terms
- Entry: VIP starts at 10,000 VIP points, earned by wagering.
- Tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with level-up GC and SC rewards.
- Weekly bonus: Bronze and above can claim one every Saturday.
- Monthly bonus and rakeback: Deadspin lists rakeback at 3.5%.
Because Stake's VIP is earned by wagering rather than buying, a player who only uses the daily 1 SC can still move up slowly. Its low-edge Originals also mean the same wagering costs less, which is the best practical reason to use them.
How other casinos do it
| Casino | Program | What stands out |
|---|---|---|
| CoinsBack | Rakeback built into the brand | Half the house edge back on every SC spin |
| TitanTreasure | Coinback | Share of daily net losses, rising with tier |
| Rollza | Seven tiers | Rakeback, cashback, level-ups up to 19 SC; rates unpublished |
| Lucky Bunny | 12 levels, 60 tiers | Progress from play and purchases |
| Casinio | Purchase-based | Daily coinback, higher limits, live chat only for VIPs |
Notice the last line. When VIP status depends on buying coins, and it unlocks basics like live chat or faster payouts, the program is doing more for the casino than for you.
Questions to ask about any VIP program
- Are the rates published? "Up to" with no numbers usually means low numbers.
- Is it earned by wagering or by buying? Wagering-based is fairer to free players.
- Is rakeback paid in SC or GC? Only SC can become a prize.
- Does the reward carry playthrough? A 3x rule on rakeback cuts its value.
- Do tiers reset? Monthly resets push you to keep playing to stay level.
When VIP becomes a problem
VIP hosts, birthday gifts and tier progress bars are designed to keep you playing. Experienced players on the forums talk about the same trap from both sides: the frustration of losing tier status, and the realisation that the rewards were a small fraction of what they spent to reach them. If you notice yourself playing to keep a level, take a break, set a limit, or ask for self-exclusion.

Short answers
What is rakeback at a sweepstakes casino?
A share of the house edge on your bets, paid back win or lose. It is calculated on the casino's expected take, not on the full bet.
What is the difference between rakeback and cashback?
Rakeback is paid on every bet; cashback is a share of net losses over a period and only pays after you lose.
Is VIP worth chasing at a sweepstakes casino?
No. VIP rewards return a small share of what you wager. Enjoy them when they come, but never play more to reach a tier.
